The novel refuses simple answers about mental illness. Rather than treating psychosis as a plot device to be resolved, Savage renders it from the inside--the private logic of delusion, the exhausting vigilance of paranoia, and the dignity patients try to preserve within a system designed primarily to contain them. The relationship between Oscar and Gilda becomes the book's emotional core: two people who recognize something true in each other precisely because the rest of the world has stopped looking closely. The title becomes the book's central question: what happens when the "good" in a person isn't enough to save the one they love, and when restraint can wound as deeply as its absence?
