Dr Blackwell Patented Compression Bra For Breast Cancer Patients Launched

Patent attorneys Edward Livingston and Bryan Loeffler were proud to attend the “Blackwell Bra” launch party in October. The bra was created by Dr Blackwell as a way of giving breast cancer patents increased comfort post surgery.

A new bra for breast cancer patients was launched on October 29, celebrating a unique product that provides comfort and ease of use to wearers. Lea M Blackwell created her “Blackwell Bra” for anyone who has undergone breast or thoracic surgery, and patent attorneys Edward Livingston and Bryan Loeffler were proud to attend. Ed and Bryan have procured several patents on the bra, as well as a drain apron for securing surgical drains worn by patients.

Blackwell, M.D., a breast surgeon at Lee Memorial Hospital, created her compression bra to give breast cancer patients a new, more practical and comfortable option for bras after breast surgeries. 

As a specialist surgeon herself, she had a unique window onto the procedures that patients go through when dealing with breast cancer. She was also witness to the special bras that they use to promote healing.

Women who undergo mastectomies, biopsies, and lumpectomy surgeries use specialist bras to decrease the swelling that’s likely to appear following the procedure. However, many patients found that these bras were scratchy, uncomfortable, and restrictive. 

It was because of this that Dr Blackwell felt the need to create her own bra, one that placed patient comfort at the forefront. Since specialty bras are necessary to support the breast tissue after surgery, she felt it was important to have one that was both functional and comfortable for the patient to ware.

Dr Blackwell has been working with a local seamstress to create the bras, and demand has been high for the product since its launch. 

She said: “I was delighted to be successful at navigating through the patent process and getting a patent issued for the postoperative compression bra. If this bra could potentially make life better for women after surgery, then I’ve accomplished my goal.”

The patents were accomplished by Livingston Loeffler, which has been helping corporations, small businesses and entrepreneurs since 1981.
