Toledo Dystonia Zoo Walk supports dystonia research treatment

The first Toledo Dystonia Zoo Walk will be held on October 5th to raise public awareness of dystonia.

Toledo, OH (Merxwire) – Toledo is one of 13 cities that will have a dystonia zoo walk in 2019. The Toledo Dystonia Zoo Walk will be held on October 5th to let everyone know that dystonia is a disabling and unrecognized neurological disease and supports the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation to conduct research to promote the treatment of individuals and families affected by the disease. And program progress.

The Toledo Dystonia Zoo Walk is a family-friendly event that doesn’t require intense exercise and does not have the necessary routes. Encourage everyone to spend the day at the zoo and enjoy everything that the Toledo Zoo has to offer. The zoo hopes to unite families with dystonia and invite more communities to understand dystonia and support medical research. National sponsors include Allergan, Merz and Ipsen.

Dystonia is characterized by extreme, involuntary muscle contractions that result in twisting, repetitive muscle movements and abnormal postures of the body and limbs.  Common signs include twisting or abnormal movements of the head and neck, excessive blinking, a breathy or choking voice, hand cramps, or a twisted foot. No fewer than 250,000 Americans are living with dystonia. Estimates suggest that 70% of patients are misdiagnosed prior to a dystonia diagnosis.

WHEN: Saturday, October 5, 2019. Registration opens at 8:00 AM. Event begins at 9:30 AM.

WHERE: Toledo Zoo & Aquarium, 2 Hippo Way, Toledo, OH

WHO: Kristin Cinglie of Monroe, MI is organizing the Toledo Dystonia Zoo Walk to promote greater awareness and to bring together individuals and families affected by dystonia in the local area. Cinglie was diagnosed with dystonia in 2012 after years of misdiagnosis. A chemical engineer and lifelong athlete, she began noticing severe cramping and tightness in her leg and shoulders while training for a half marathon. Today, Cinglie experiences chronic, painful muscle spasms in her neck, torso, leg, arm, and feet. She often needs a cane to walk, and experiences debilitating headaches. Cinglie  hopes the Toledo Zoo Walk may yield interest in a local dystonia support group.

The Dystonia Medical Research Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to advancing research for improved dystonia treatments and ultimately a cure, promoting awareness, and supporting the well-being of affected individuals and families.

Vaping group plotted lobbying efforts at Trump's DC hotel

Sep 18, 2019

NEW YORK — America's vaping industry has in recent years taken its fight to fend off regulation directly to President Donald Trump's doorstep, with a lobbying group twice booking annual meetings at his Washington hotel and e-cigarette maker Juul hiring two of his former White House officials. In 2017 and 2018, the Vapor Technology Association met at Trump's hotel to strategize how to lobby the administration, with a Republican lawmaker at one conference advising it to emphasize jobs created by the growing industry and how regulation could devastate hundreds of small vaping businesses. An intensive, multimillion-dollar lobbying effort by the...

Column: Solheim Cup great theater even without best players

Sep 18, 2019

The stage alone makes this the most exciting week of the year in women's golf. The Solheim Cup delivers more pomp, more passion and more raw emotion than any other event on the schedule. Hugs give way to handshakes after the final hole. For three days, and sometimes longer, friends become the fiercest of rivals. It becomes personal. And it doesn't matter which team has better players, who has more majors or a higher world ranking. This is match play. This is all about the flag. The one person responsible for making it such a big week? Seve Ballesteros, of...

After tragic year, Bode Miller heads to Montana's mountains

Sep 18, 2019

HELENA, Mont. — Retired U.S. downhill skier Bode Miller decided a change of scenery was needed after a tumultuous year in which he experienced the tragic death of his toddler daughter, the birth of a son and now the expected arrival of twin boys this fall. So the 41-year-old six-medal Olympic champion and his pregnant wife, Morgan, headed to the Montana mountains with four children in tow to settle into a new home at Big Sky Resort north of Yellowstone National Park. There, he plans to give his California-raised children a modernized taste of his childhood in northern New Hampshire,...

Star Wars hotel at Disney World like a cruise into space

Sep 18, 2019

ORLANDO, Fla. — It's going to be a cruise to nowhere, but that will be just fine with die-hard "Star Wars" fans. Disney officials on Tuesday offered new details on its recently announced Star Wars-themed resort in Florida. "Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser" will be like a two-day cruise in that it drops visitors into a completely self-contained world. Except instead of traveling on the high seas, visitors will be made to feel like they've been launched from a parking lot at Walt Disney World in Florida to a spaceship millions of miles above Earth. Once aboard the "ship," visitors become...

This is the fifth surgery to his left knee — one more surgery than Woods has had on his back — dating to 1994 when he was at Stanford. His agent at Excel Sports, Mark Steinberg, says the knee had been irritating him over the last few months. Woods had the surgery last week during the Tour Championship. Woods, who...
